What is a good tragic historic event to write a script on?

In my creative writing class we are going to write a script. I want to write a play about a tragic historical event. Originally I wanted to use the Hindenburg disaster, but now I have no clue how to write it. Any good tragic events I could use, that are not overused?

You have to decide if the "tragic event" is a short-term event, in which case it should probably trigger your story or set it in motion -- e.g., two people, whose loved ones were lost on the Titanic, find love as they struggle come to terms with the disaster -- or a long-term event like The Great Depression or the Vietnam War, in which case the event might keep the main characters apart.

try Hiroshima or Nagasaki. there were thousands of innocent people who died because some powerful men were fighting, trying to gain more power. they died for nothing, they had no chance for life. And it's not only grown-up men who died. Innocent women and children did too. It's more than tragic, and not overused.

Another tragic event is the one at Thermophile, where 300 Spartans stopped the Persian army, even if every single one of them died. I must admit though that it was used before, in the movie 300.

Go with something more recent that people remember and will react to like the london city bombings of the buses the coal miners in chile the tsunami in indonesia. Historical example could use the assisnation of arch duke ferdinand that set off world war 1. Or what about the genocide in rwanda that was ignored by the world?
"good" tragic event? isn't that contracting? anyway if you are looking for historic tragic events- you could always pick a Greek tragedy, and what about Hiroshima Nagasaki in Japan tragedy or the Bhopal Gas Cracker tragedy in India?What is a good tragic historic event to write a script on?

you could write a script about the effects the wall street crash had on peoples lives and how people managed to live during the years of depression.
You could write about concentration camps during Hitler's rule.( also known as HOLOCAUST)
The Obama presidency? Or maybe the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior?
