I have to write an essay on a violent event that happened in the 20th century. Anyone got any ides. I don't want to do the Holocaust or the Rape of Nanking since those ones have already been chosen.What is the most violent event in the 20th century?

If it has to be more specific, then the Battle of Stalingrad (1942 - 1943) was the bloodiest battle in human history with over 1.5 million dead. It was definitely one of the most horrific events of the 20th century.



To put it in perspective, the atomic bombings caused maybe 200,000 deaths combined compared to 1,500,000 that died in Stalingrad, and the city of Stalingrad was more completely destroyed than either Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
You may to to consider the 1916 Battle Of Somme in WWI as the most violent "event" in the 20th Century. Three million soldiers, over a million casualties, and neither side gained a thing.

My choice would be this: June 4 1989, about 100k students protest for freedom and democracy at Beijing鈥檚 Tiananmen Square. According to the Chinese Red Cross 2.5k people died while 7k-8k people were injured. A historical event that should be used as a reference for generations to come.

I would say in terms of a single event it would hands down have to be the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and then the one on Nagasaki. I don't think you could find any one event that could match that in destruction and lives lost.
