What is a major social event that occurred during the 20th century?

It's for a project, and I need a major social event that impacted and influenced people today.

Do you mean in the USA or in North America or in the world? Often things that affect us here in North America are not a big deal in Europe or Asia. The word 'social' has more to do with finding like feelings and like thoughts. I would question the inclusion of the Cold War - it was more like the pulling away from each other than the coming together. It was a very anti-social time making people suspicious often of even their own relatives..



But things like the Great Depression tended to bring people together to help each other get through it and while it may not have leveled the playing field, it did shorten the distance between rich and poor of the time.



The emergence of the Unions - again lessened the distance between rich and poor and made working people more equal than they had previously been.



In the 2nd half of the 20th Century both The Civil Rights Movement and

Feminism were major events, particularly in the USA. It has been a long constant war, but black people are more equal than they were before the Civil Rights Movement and women are more equal than we used to be before the Feminist Movement. These are battles that will continue as both blacks and women are not yet completely equal but, as they say," We've come a long way, baby!" :o)



If you are talking about events with a party-time flavour - then Woodstock for sure. Even people who never got there were affected by it. And I would add Beatle Mania.When they first came to North America, it was referred to as an Invasion. And before the Beatles, Elvis the Pelvis. Initially, the TV stations would not film him except from the waist up. Hilarious now but very serious stuff back then. Ahhh! You had to be there!
