I agree, if it's a home work you got to do the research yourself. Best way to learn.
Having said that, I'd recommend you take your favourite programming book (let's say Java :) ) and go towards the end of the book which is usually to do with GUI development and more interestingly, how button/click events are first caught and then executed in an event-loop.
