I have a five month old hound/bordercollie mix who is an excellent retriever with an exceptional ability to leap and is progressing as he continues to grow into his VERY long legs. I live near a river and he loves the water. However, we have no dock or pier for him to practice leaping from. I really don't know what the name of the event is, but you really don't need a dock or pier. Just start with small throws, and gradually progress until he goes a long distance to retrieve. Just remember to keep it fun, and reward all retrieves. Make sure to check first for any fast currents, or whirlpools, as they can be deadly
